Kythnos Hiking (www.kythnoshiking.com) is launching its own wildlife tour on the Greek island at the end of March to show off exotic fritillary and orchid flowers, spot migrating birds such as birds of prey and herons, plus confirm the presence of rare monk seals around the island.
The price per person for the 6-day 28 March tour is 620 euro, higher than our classic guided hiking tour in order to incorporate the cost of David Koutsogiannopoulos (pictured above), the Greek nature guide, a minibus to cut out chunks of hiking, and the boat trip. Booking here.
A slideshow on the Kythnos Hiking website gives a sample of bird species we will see, while a second slideshow already on the site present the exotic flowers such as fritillary and orchid species. Reptiles, such as lizards and snakes, feature on the island too.
Our own nature tour will be similar to the more comprehensive tour we will run for the UK nature tour operator Greentours. Ours will be slightly shorter and includes David's guiding. It will use similar accommodation in Hora, the island capital. The detailed itinerary is here,
For sea mammals, there is often the chance to see dolphins beside the ferry from Lavrio to Kythnos. For the monk seals around the island we have to keep our distance. Recent contacts with nature specialists confirm their presence in small numbers, reflecting large territories.
From the start of April we run our classic six-day hiking tours with walking on five days from traditional villages, past wild countryside, historic sites, and taking a lunch pause on one of Kythnos's many beaches. Optional additions in 2022 will include guided bay-to-bay swimming.
As always we endeavour to apply top quality Covid health norms and expect all guests to arrive double or triple vaccinated or carrying a certificate showing they have had the illness and recovered.
